I believe through my limited experience, that many Christians have a very weak theology of church.
Church has become an inward focused, what am I going to get out of it, type of mentality for many attendees. Church for many is something that is done one day out of the week, then put on the back burner till the following Sunday. I say this due to the lack of involvement of many regular attendees.
Usually the same twenty percent of the congregation does most of the work that needs done. Some of this is not necessarily the fault of those attending, as there seems to be a tradition of inviting people to come to church, rather than the church meeting people where church is needed. We build great buildings that hold hundreds, sometimes thousands of people to praise and worship our God, when that same praise and worship can be done in an area that would bring greater glory to God. I do believe there needs to be a central location, a church building, but I believe that a majority of the ministry needs to take place in the community, to include worship. Church has become a material object, rather than a body of believers seeking the will of God. I say this as a general term, not totally inclusive, as I know some churches that are doing exactly what I believe needs done, taking church to those in need.
My theology of church is pretty simple. We, the body of Christ, are the church. The church is here for the sick, the needy, not the healthy. The church needs to be where it is needed most, in the communities tending to the needs of God’s children.
In the process of tending to those in need, we make disciples through the sharing of the love of
Christ. This accomplishes the Great Commission, I believe in a manner that glorifies the King, Jesus Christ.
